New England hip-hop artist Freddy Lap$ is true to this, not new to this. With well over a decade of artistry and creation under his belt, Lap$ is a veteran. From his debut album “The Starting Lap” all the way to his latest release in “Gravy”, Freddy has always stayed honest to the culture that raised him. On top of all this, the New England artist is continuing to observe and learn from the artists and creators around him. Now that Freddy Lap$ is back, he’s raring to go with multiple projects on deck that are close to completion. Take some time to catch up on Freddy Lap$ before the race begins again.
Freddy Lap$' entire family history is filled with performers and entertainers, it’s literally in his blood. “Whether it was from my great grandfather who was a classic violinist and was actually the first in our family to ever publish music,” Lap$ says, “all the way down to having “skit nights” at my fathers side of the family reunion in the summertime.” The love for music goes beyond the sounds for Lap$ as his father instilled the passion for learning the details and context behind the music. As Freddy grew up and his parents separated, he would find peace, solace and perserverance in hip-hop music. It gave him a platform to vent and deal with the daily stresses of life and survival. Freddy witnessed his first cypher and from there the artist’s journey really begun. This led Freddy to buying records, freestyling on his own and honing his craft, moving onto freestyling in front of family. Continuing into high school Freddy was doing laps, freestyling at parties and gaining notoriety amongst his peers.
The minute one presses play on Lap$’ music, his gritiness, his willingness to study are all put on display. The bone crushing production mixed with Freddy’s lyricism make it fit for both the smoke circle and the whip. Freddy Lap$ stands out because he’s paved the way for some of the underground acts we’re hearing today. Back in 2008, Freddy released his debut album “The Starting Lap”, the jumping off point for the New England artist. Embracing the boom bap sound he grew up with, Freddy wears his motivations on his sleeve. “The Starting Lap” led Freddy to performing and opening for all kinds of legendary artists. However, real life sometimes gets in the way in pursuit of our dreams.
Freddy Lap$ would take a hiatus for a few years to get on his “grown man”. Coming off opening for artists like GZA, Cannibus, performing all over the Massachusetts circuit, New Hampshire, Maine and having his songs played over the radio airwaves, there were still responsibilities to attend to. During that hiatus though, Freddy’s love for the music never waned. “I have to make the music that I’m supposed to make because I owe it to the culture and myself,” Lap$ said. Back in the studio and ready to work, his latest EP “Gravy” was born. Six tracks deep, Lap$ picked up right where he left off, but with an evolved sense of self. With “Gravy” Lap$ ended up working with Flip Jackson, Kaishiro Pierce & Stu Bangas and continued his stamp of honesty layered in boom bap production. On top of this Lap$ is opening for the legendary AZ in May. This is just the beginning for Freddy as he has two projects ready to go, including his full-length follow up. The race has already begun and you’re behind! Catch up on Freddy Lap$ now and see him perform in a town near you soon!
